All about the GL Diet
In the past few years ‘Diets’ have been the hottest topic of discussion. It has been hogging more limelight than the celebrity pair ‘Brangelina’! All through you have been just a mute audience and tried to understand which one was the best among the lot. Well there are quite a few diets on the market and everyone claims that theirs is the best. But in the recent few months the GL diet has been the frontrunner in this race. So, let us just make an in depth analysis of the GL diet and find out the reasons why it is being claimed as the mother of all diets.
The GL diet stands for “Glycemic load” and it is an indication of the total Glycemic load that a person consumes. It takes into account the amount of carbohydrate that a person consumes and its impact on the body.
The GI diet, which was the predecessor of the GL diet was concerned with the rate of conversion of carbohydrates into sugar but did not have any information about the amount of carbohydrates that a food contained. It has been observed that the foods which had a low GI if consumed in higher quantities resulted in a higher GL. So, people who followed the GI diet ended up eating high amount of low GI food and in the process consumed high GL food. Back to square one was the result. People did not lose weight and instead put on some.
Since, GL diet provides us with a complete idea of the total carbohydrates that we consume; we can specifically decide the foods to incorporate in our diets that can help us lose weight. The popularity of the GL diet is on the rise because now people don’t have to stay from the foods that they love but only keep a tab on the total GL count. So it’s a relief from the diets that completely banned carbohydrates from the weight loss diets. Instead of cutting down on the carbohydrates, we need to watch only the amount of servings to keep the blood sugar under control and keep the extra fat at bay.
So, let us look at the foods that are permitted in the GL diet and the ones have been blacklisted. You can gorge on the foods of your choice like Porridge oats, dry chocolate, sweet potato, cauliflower, soy flour, ground nuts, fresh fruits, green vegetables, pearl barley etc. Though there is no complete restriction on any food but it is better to avoid foods like Rice, Sugar puddings, Floury potatoes, milk chocolates, mashed potato and white flour.
The basics of GL states that one can consume any food but restrict the servings so that the total GL of a meal remains low. GL is a diet that really lives up to the expectation of a person in a search of a complete weight loss diet.
