Igredients

  • 3/4 cup Water
  • 1/4 cup uncooked bulgur (Cracked wheat)
  • 1/4 cup plain nonfat or low-fat yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried dill weed
  • 1 cup finely chopped seeded cucumber
  • 1 lb lean grounded beef, crumbled
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano leaves
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 6 pita loaves (6inch), warmed leaf lettuce
  • 12 slices tomato

6 Servings

1. Bring water to boil over high heat in 1 quart saucepan. Remove from heat. Stir in bulgar. Cover. Let stand for 30 minutes, or until bulgar softens. Meanwhile, in small mixing bowl, combine yougurt, dill weed and cucumber. Cover with plastic wrap. Chill.

2. Combine beef, peel, oregano, salt and pepper in medium mixing bowl. Drain any excess water from bulgar. Add bulgar to beef mixture. Mix well.

3. Form mixture into six 3/4-inch-thick oval patties. Place under broiler with surface of meat 4 inches from heat. Broil burgers 8 to 10 minutes, or until desired doneness, turning burgers over once.

4. Fold each pita loaf in half. Place lettuce, 1 burger and two tomato slices in each pita. Spoon cucumber mixture evenly into each pita. Secure with wooden pick.
