Cellulite – What is It & What to Do about It
Cellulite is fat and since everyone can get fat, everyone can get cellulite. Even fit people can have cellulite. The amount of cellulite a person has depends on factors such as genetics, gender, age, and hormonal levels. Cellulite occurs when the fat directly under the skin (subcutaneous fat) is pushed up through the connective tissue giving it that lumpy bumpy appearance. While about 90% of women get cellulite only about 10% of men get it, this is because the structure of men’s skin prevents it from happening in most cases.
Special creams such as topical vitamin A, retinol and tretinoin help increase the collagen content and firm the skin thus reducing the appearance of cellulite. However, these types of creams can be expensive and are only a temporary fix.
Tanning does not camouflage cellulite instead the UV radiation can weaken and thin the skin actually making the cellulite more noticeable.
Liposuction does not help with cellulite. In most cases it actually makes the appearance of the cellulite even worse!
Exercising can reduce the amount of fat and thus reduce the amount of cellulite. A great way to reduce the appearance of cellulite is by having firm toned muscles.
The FDA has approved a massage tool for the treatment of cellulite. The procedure is called Endemologie and typically requires 10 to 20 sessions at $45 to $65 each to see results, then 1 or 2 maintenance visits a month are needed to keep up the results.
