Motivation is Key!

Written on: 12 Jan 09 | Filed under: Weight Loss

Any time one starts a fitness or weight loss program they begin with intense motivation and drive to be successful.  The problem for some lies in keeping that motivation and building consistency over the long haul.

Everyone starts off the day with all of the very best intentions – to stay on track food wise, to exercise, and to make healthy choices – but life has a funny way of getting in the way.  Typically the first things to slip when things start going wrong are food and/or exercise.  How then does one stay on track and not lose the motivation?  By building consistency.

According to most studies it takes a minimum of 21 days to build a habit.  How then do you stay on track for those key first 21 days?

1. Never allow yourself to even think the thought “I am not motivated” let alone let it pass from your lips.
This means that what you are attempting to do is something that you truly want and desire to be successful in doing.  Yes, there might be times when you really don’t want to eat healthy or to exercise; however, you always must be truly motivated to reach the final goal be it weight loss or fitness.  Also, there will be times when you choose not to exercise or eat healthy, but let those be cognitive choices.

2. Take it slow and build that momentum one small step at a time.
For example if you are just beginning to implement exercise into your life then start with 10 minutes a day and build up from there until you can comfortably reach your desired goal amount of exercise.  Even doing a small amount of exercise such as 10 minutes a day is enough to build that habit!

3. Don’t be afraid to move to plan B, or even plan C if necessary. Life can get in the way and by having alternate plans already thought of and in place you can avert disaster.  Sometimes getting to the gym is impossible so have a plan for being able to exercise at home instead.  Sometimes an unexpected change in schedule occurs which requires eating out instead of what you had planned to cook at home so pre-pick options that are healthy choices at a number of restaurants.

The key to holding on to that motivation and building consistency is in essence planning and believing in yourself!

I also feel that it is extremely hard to stay motivated. I workout with a buddy to keep me motivated, but sometimes my friend can’t workout and I find myself start to slack off. Motivation is the keep to losing weight, but I also found that when I don’t workout I keep motivated with eating healthy by writing down everything I eat on a daily basis. If I continue to do this, I am still able to lose weight just maybe not the right way because I am not consistently exercising.

Writing down what you eat is a great way to stay motivated. Great tip for other users ;)
